In 2015, my partner, Ng Mei Mei and I, looked to participating in silence as a means to deter cyberbullies. This was our submission in the film category for the local Young Lions Competition that year. The brief was to create a 60-second clip to encourage victims or third-parties to take a stand against cyberbullying.

In 2015, my co-worker, Ng Mei Mei, and I, took to the saying – “Ignorance is bliss” – as a means to deter cyberbullies. This was our submission for the film category at the Singapore Young Lions competition. The brief was to create a 60-second clip to encourage victims or third-parties to take a stand against cyberbullying.

The insight to this short film came from our own experiences in dealing with bullies (albeit at the playground, not in school). One of the best advice I received was always to ignore the verbal insults. That is, in the words of my mother,

“Just pretend you never heard la.”

Most cyberbullies assume an anonymous role online and there is no stopping them from posting threats or hurtful remarks. Voluntarily turning a deaf ear would send only one message loud and clear - no one is giving any attention to their hurtful remarks.

Our efforts paid off and we were given the chance to represent Singapore at the Young Lions competition in Cannes that year.
